How to be a self-starter in the digital age
The books, magazines and apps that people are downloading are increasingly filling shelves and making their way into libraries, in the same way that a smartphone could one day be used to order groceries.
The new format is called digital books, and while it’s been in the news a few times in recent months, there’s a lot more going on than a simple book catalog.
Some of the biggest names in the publishing world, including Simon & Schuster, Random House, Simon & Shuster, Hachette and HarperCollins, have all invested heavily in the new format.
But many are still struggling to figure out how to sell it to consumers.
“People think it’s just a catalog, but the problem is it’s not a catalog,” said Peter Gormley, author of The Big Book of English Literature.
“It’s more like a list of books, with a list price.
If you go to Amazon, there are only so many books you can buy.
You’re looking for the one book that’s cheaper.”
In a world of ever-expanding digital downloads, it’s becoming increasingly important for publishers to make sure that their books are available to a wider audience, and that people get to know them.
But how to reach a wider pool of readers in the process?
Gorm, author and author of the book Digital Books, said that the biggest challenge facing publishers today is that there are so many competing apps.
“One thing publishers have to realize is that they can’t do all of the things they did in the past, or the thing that they were doing in the 1990s, when people were downloading books,” Gorm said.
“They can’t sell all of their books digitally.”
The problem is that most people don’t have the technology to get to all the apps, he said.
There’s no such thing as a free download, and there are plenty of competitors to download.
“We need to be very smart in our marketing strategy and our marketing tactics to help people get what they want,” he said, adding that publishers are also going to have to adjust their books in a way that makes them appealing to a broader audience.
“There’s a new technology that’s going to make a huge difference for authors.
We’re going to need to make the books available to everyone,” Gomley said.
As a result, there will be more books to download in the future, which will allow publishers to increase sales.
“I think the biggest thing publishers can do is be very, very careful about how they sell digital books,” said Gorm.
“Publishers need to do more to make it easy for people to buy their books.”
